May 2025

CamSight has been operating from Green End Road in Cambridge since 1996, providing a low vision centre to support service users from across the county, and as an administrative base for the charity.

Twenty-nine years later, the way we deliver our services have substantially changed, and we need to adapt accordingly. Very few of our staff are based in the building now. CamSight’s mobile and community services provide support in people’s homes and in communities across Cambridgeshire and Peterborough. Some services are delivered over the telephone or online. This is hugely beneficial to our service users, as well as staff, reducing travel times and costs, and optimising staff working time. We no longer need such a large space for the reduced number of face-to-face appointments that take place in our offices.

The costs of running and maintaining the Green End Road office are increasing each year. The building will also require investment in the near future to continue to comply with Health and Safety standards. Taking into account all of these factors, we have made the decision to move out of our Green End Road building as soon as we can secure a suitable tenant.

Please be assured that our services will not be affected but will be improved. Keeping a presence in Cambridge is essential to us so that we can continue our valued face-to-face services. We have identified several smaller, more cost-effective offices in Cambridge that would reduce our overheads and are well served by public transport and travel networks, as well as providing a much more accessible and welcoming environment for our visitors.

Moving offices represents an exciting new chapter in our long history. We, the Trustees, are ultimately responsible for the management and direction of CamSight and believe this to be the right way forward for the charity, and most importantly our service users. We look forward to sharing more information as our plans progress.

Thank you all for your continued support,

Nick Redmayne, Chair of the Trustees.

We realise you may have questions about our move, and have prepared a couple of key answers below.

  1. Is CamSight closing down?

CamSight is not closing, we are relocating so that we can continue to deliver our services from a more suitable and accessible office space.

  1. Is CamSight running out of money?

Funding is increasingly competitive, and our running costs are increasing. By leasing the Green End Road office, we will be securing a new income stream whilst also reducing our expenditure. Whilst we are operating at a deficit, we continue to fundraise as always and this planned move will help to safeguard our services for the future.

  1. Will the move affect our services?

We will continue to offer our full range of services across the county, with absolutely no change to our Peer Support Groups, Home Visiting, Counselling or Volunteer services. We will continue to provide pre-booked appointments for low vision equipment for people who would rather come to us instead of a home visit. These will be held at the new office facility, which will be served by public transport as well as having accessible parking.

  1. Are any staff losing their jobs?

No staff are being made redundant as we are only relocating office space. Our information and advice phone service will still be available on our existing land line number, as we will take this with us when we move. You will be able to contact all staff via their mobiles as normal.

  1. What is happening to Cambridge Talking News?

Cambridge Talking News will still be delivering their weekly audio newsletters and, depending on the office space we take on, we hope they will continue to use our facilities to do so.
