Pam, from Cambourne, reflects on her time volunteering with CamSight and shares her experiences with our Bar Hill and Bourn peer support groups.

"I was a volunteer driver for CamSight from just after I retired, in 2011, until 2025. The role involved making sure service users could get to rural peer support groups, so I took them to Bar Hill and Bourn.

I really enjoyed learning more about partial sight and what help is available, especially as age-related macular degeneration runs in my family. It was always good hearing clients’ stories and reminiscing together.

One of the most memorable events was an outing to Anglesey Abbey, with a guided touch tour of the objects, and then soaking up the colours in the formal garden. I also loved the positive reaction in the Bourn Group to me reading aloud an article from my National Trust magazine about a blind gardener at one of their properties.

I gained more insight into how to help, wait patiently, and listen! I also had lots of moral support through my own cataract surgery last summer. So, I have gained as much from CamSight as I have given in volunteering and would like to take this opportunity to thank your whole community very much, for allowing me to be part of CamSight.

It has been a joyful and companionable learning journey.

Now I am moving on to more local activities in Cambourne, which are already keeping me very busy!"
